Flat-pack furniture is a form of furniture that requires assembly by the customer after the purchase of the product. Unlike other types of furniture, such as custom-made furniture, the main advantages of this type of solution are the ease of shipping and easy storage. They tend to have affordable prices but on the other hand, they are usually associated with poor quality and low durability due to the materials used, as well as a complex assembly and a simple and limited design. In this exercise, these associations are challenged by developing a backless seat.
Such a design should meet the following requirements:
It shall be fabricated with the milling machine.
It shall be assembled without glue, screws or nails.
The result shall be a stable, robust and functional seat.
The material to be used shall be compact HPL (High Pressure Laminate) boards from Formica
My design consists of four pieces in which the leg is repeated 8 times, rotating around the vertical axis of the chair and taking advantage of the weight of the person sitting down so that everything is in its correct position. This repetition of 8 legs is inspired by the morphology of a spider.
