Tsugite / coat rack

the tetris of traditional japanese joinery

-

Traditional Japanese carpentry employs a series of ancient techniques that allow wooden structures to be built without the use of nails, screws or adhesives. One of the most difficult parts of this craft is hand-carving the intricate wooden joints to fit together perfectly like the pieces of a tetris puzzle.

To make this ancient tradition more accessible, a team of researchers at the University of Tokyo has developed an ingenious free 3D modeling software called Tsugite that allows users to create custom wood joints that can be fabricated with a CNC milling machine.

This coat rack plays with the possibilities offered by the program, using the repetition of non-orthogonal joints, as well as taking into account the assembly direction of the parts to withstand stresses and allow for proper assembly.
